Saathi

Someone to talk to, in their own language. Chats stay on the phone.

Saathi is an AI companion app for Android and iOS, built with Expo (React Native). People pick who they want to talk to, one of 11 ready companions or one they create, and chat in English, Hinglish or Hindi. Companions remember what matters, and everything a user writes stays on their phone in an encrypted database. There's no server to run: each user connects the AI service they choose with their own key, so you pay for no model calls and keep no user data.

What it does

What Saathi does

11 companions, or their own

Two partners, two best friends, Maa, Papa, an elder brother, an elder sister, Dadi, a listener and a coach, each with a face, a nature and a way of talking. Users can also create their own: name, photo, relation, nature, language, backstory and interests, with a live preview.

Chat like texting a person

Short messages arrive word by word, with a typing indicator, in English, Hinglish or Hindi and with the right grammatical gender for the user. A companion can also send a daily check-in at a time the user picks.

They remember

Each companion keeps short memories, like "Has an interview on Friday", and a summary of the story so far, and brings them up naturally. Users can see, edit, add and delete every memory.

Chats stay on the phone

Everything a user writes is kept in an encrypted database on their phone. App lock with a PIN or Face ID / fingerprint, an option to hide the app in the app switcher, and export, import and delete everything.

No server, no model bill

Each user picks the AI service in Settings → AI: Ollama Cloud, OpenAI, Claude, Gemini, OpenRouter, Groq or any OpenAI-compatible API, with their own key. Save and test checks it with one tiny message.

Safety built in

Age is asked first, and teens never see partner companions. Partner companions are romantic, within limits written into every prompt. A helpline card shows when someone writes about suicide or self-harm, and any reply can be reported.

Who it's for

  • Founders who want to launch their own AI companion app without building one from scratch
  • Developers who want a finished Expo (React Native) app to rebrand and publish on Android and iOS
  • Anyone building for people who'd rather chat in Hindi or Hinglish than in English

What you need

  • Node.js 22 or newer
  • Tested on an Android emulator with Ollama Cloud: connecting a key, chatting in Hinglish, and the messages for a wrong key or model. Not yet tested on a physical phone, and the iOS build hasn't been made yet
  • For Android: Android Studio with an emulator. For iOS: a Mac with Xcode and CocoaPods
  • It runs as a development build, not in Expo Go, because of the encrypted database. npm run android or npm run ios makes that build for you
  • An API key from one of the supported AI services to try it. Each of your users brings their own
  • To publish: your own Google Play and Apple developer accounts. EAS Build can make the release builds without Android Studio or Xcode
  • Chat quality depends on the model each user picks. Small models are weaker at Hinglish and at staying in character
FAQ

Questions

Do I need to run a server?

No. The app is its own backend: it builds the prompt on the phone and calls the AI service the user picked, with their key. There's nothing to host, and nothing a user writes reaches you.

Who pays for the AI?

Each user, with their own API key from the service they pick in Settings → AI. The app opens each service's key page, and Save and test checks the key. You pay for no model calls and have no limits to manage.

Can I put my own brand on it?

Yes. The name, colours, helplines, report email and privacy link are in one file, brand.json. Replace the icon and splash, and edit the companions and prompts in their own files. The licence lets you publish it as your own app.

Is it already on the Play Store or App Store?

No. You publish it under your own name, with your own developer accounts. The publishing guide covers release builds, the store listings and the privacy and data forms.

How does it handle age?

You set the minimum age in brand.json. The app asks for a birthday first and stops for anyone younger. Users under 18 never see partner companions and get an age-appropriate level. A helpline card shows on self-harm talk, and users can report any reply.

Which languages does it speak?

Users chat in English, Hinglish or Hindi, chosen when they start. The app's own screens are in English and Hindi.

Will you help me set it up?

Yes. Every purchase includes a free setup call of about 30 minutes to get it running on your machine. Reply to your purchase email, or email goyalmanish3333@gmail.com with your GitHub username, and I'll find a time with you. Custom changes are a separate, paid job.

How do I get it after paying?

A GitHub invite to the private repo goes to the username you entered at checkout, usually within about a minute. Accept it and follow the README.
